I review and write about audio for CNET, Sound + Vision, Forbes, and was technical editor of Home Theater and editor-in-chief of Home Entertainment. I am neither a “true believer” when it comes to cables (spend all you can!) nor an absolute skeptic (all speaker cables sound the same!). I believe in the process of blind listening tests with multiple people and evidence ahead of assumptions. And going into this piece I had no assumptions or wishes for the results to come out any way in particular. I’ve always used good cables, I thought, on the instrument end.
Separation was noticeably improved, mid bass tamed BUT low frequency bass was also noticeably weaker. I added two to my cart and when I took delivery this week I was surprised that they were in fact pairs, I guess I missed that small note in the title. They were sitting at my house so this morning I decided to try them out. The low frequencies are concentrated into the center of the cable due to the “skin effect” and surrounding it are 6 separate polyethylene insulated conductor groups for the mids and highs. Polyethylene is a lower loss dielectric material than the typical PVC and provides more detailed and transparent sound.

Wire is color coded copper (+) and silver (-) to speed a trouble-free installation. I hooked them up to the included receiver and bookshelf speakers I received and I was just blown away by the quality of sound that was being produced, it was fantastic. So I thought, if I am going to review these cables, I am going to a straight up comparison with another speaker cable of the same gauge. That would just have just told us what was good for those speakers. It would be easy to take from this that you should get cheap cable if you have inexpensive speakers, but that’s not the whole story. Next, we compared the Monoprice 2747 to the Pyle PSC1250. This test was similar to our first test, in that it was the same thickness of wire but different brands. The result was less apparent than the result from 14 vs. 12 gauge test, but there was still a noticeable difference. The Monoprice sounded a little more open and slightly richer.

And then I bought some GREAT cables as an experiment. I expected, at best, subtle differences, but got enormous ones. Surprisingly hard to find thin twin speaker wire in a 100 foot bundle. Thin 24 gauge Twisted copper wire with a clear vinyl coating.
With speaker cables you’re more concerned with resistance. Prior to setting up the attenuator, the improved sound and response were immediate. Cables are heavy duty, well made, and look good too. The oversized boots on the connectors/ends make it easy to grip when plugging / unplugging them. Connect speakers to your A/V receiver or amplifier.

Delivery times may vary, especially during peak periods. So after all this research, all this testing, and, on your part, all this reading, I’m saying there’s no “best” speaker cable. How can I still recommend the Monoprice 2747 after all that? Because it was the clear winner with the reference system and nearly the same with the less-expensive speakers. In addition, because it’s a thick 12 gauge cable, it’s capable of much longer runs than thinner cables. It’s the safest bet and best deal for those not wanting to spend the time trying out multiple cables to find the “best” with their system.
The connectors are high quality, Neutrik Speakon connectors. This was the perfect upgrade for my small PA, my old 18 gauge cables was old, too small and worn out. Musicians Friend is my “go to, one stop shop” for deals on accessories, instruments and live sound support.
